We’re sure you’ve heard it before—your child should be reading every day. But why? How much?

It’s simple. We must be able to read to learn independently. Reading is required for every class, whether online or in-person, so in order to succeed in school, we must be able to read well.

Daily reading will help your child connect the written word to the spoken word, while improving vocabulary and understanding. It doesn’t have to be a lot! Reading just a small amount every day over time turns out to be a big number. The more practice your child gets, the better reader they become. Let’s use the example below to illustrate just how quickly it adds up.

Between the 2 children, who would you predict to be the better reader? Writer? Who would have the better vocabulary? Just 20 extra minutes of reading a day made a substantial difference.

We know getting your child to read everyday can sometimes be easier said than done. Your child may be resistant to reading due to a lack of confidence in their reading ability.
