How Reading Skills Impact Test Performance (and What You Can Do to Help)

by | March 19, 2025

When we think about test prep, we often focus on memorizing facts, practicing problems, and reviewing notes. But there’s one skill that plays a huge role in test success across all subjects—reading. 📚✨

Whether it’s math word problems, science explanations, or history questions, strong reading skills help students understand directions, process information quickly, and confidently answer questions. If a child struggles with decoding, fluency, or comprehension, tests can feel frustrating—even when they know the material!

How Reading Challenges Can Affect Testing:

  • Slow reading speed – Kids may run out of time before finishing.
  •  Difficulty understanding questions – If they misread instructions, they might answer incorrectly.
  • Trouble remembering what they read – Poor comprehension can make multi-step problems harder.
  • Struggles with focus – If reading is exhausting, they may lose concentration quickly.

How to Strengthen Reading for Test Success:

  • Practice reading daily – Even 10-15 minutes a day builds fluency and stamina.
  • Read test-style passages – Have kids practice reading nonfiction, word problems, and multiple-choice questions.
  • Teach them to slow down – Encourage re-reading tricky parts to improve comprehension.
  • Build vocabulary – The more words they know, the easier it is to understand test content. You can find a resource for vocabulary practice here.

The good news? Reading skills can be improved! When kids feel confident in their reading, they feel more confident in every subject—and that helps reduce test anxiety too. At Langsford, we help students build stronger decoding, fluency, and comprehension so they can tackle tests (and schoolwork) with confidence.
