Does your child have difficulty recognizing words, or sounding out words that they don’t recognize? One thing that is important for them to focus on is the vowel sound in the word. Generally, when you look at the sounds that make up words, the consonants are pretty constant. You can count on them to say what you expect them to say. The vowels, on the other hand, are much more inconsistent.
If your child is struggling with a word, have them identify the vowel sound first, then read the rest of the word. This will make it easier for them to identify the word.
Additionally, if you are aware of different phonics rules that your child is learning in school, you can help them attend to those things as well (for example, what an e at the end of the word does to the vowel sound.) Looking at the vowel sounds and the different phonics rules that your child is learning will help them become more independent in learning how to read!
