4 Warning Signs to Watch For This School Year

by | November 13, 2018

Now that the school year has officially been underway for a few months, many of us have fallen into a routine. However, it is important to pay attention to any red flags that show up in the first part of the school year.

1. Inconsistent Grades

The biggest sign that something is up is your child’s academic performance. Are they bringing home consistently low grades? Are they dropping as the grading period moves on? Take note of any patterns you may see.

2. Disorganization

Monitor how your child keeps track of homework and assignments. Also monitor the quality of the work– is it sloppy or rushed? These are signs of a lack of attention to detail.

3. Homework Taking a Long Time

Most teachers give an estimate at the beginning of the school year as to how long homework assignments should take. If it takes longer than expected, this could be a sign that your child doesn’t understand what is being taught, is having trouble focusing, or is having trouble reading or understanding the directions.

4. Negative Self-Talk

Has your child talked negatively about their abilities? Are they becoming frustrated during homework time?

If your child is showing any of these signs, it is time to talk with their teacher. An evaluation to pinpoint the problem may be needed.
